About this role

Yellowhead Auto Body is an auto body repair shop in Ajax, Ontario. We are hiring a light duty cleaner to keep our customer areas, offices, washrooms and shop floor clean and presentable.

A typical day starts with the office and front counter, then the washrooms and lunchroom. You will vacuum, mop, wipe down surfaces, empty waste and recycling, and clean the shop-floor walkways. Most of the work happens on weekday afternoons after the shop is quiet. Supplies and equipment are provided.

What you'll be doing

  • General cleaning. Vacuum, mop and sweep offices, hallways, washrooms and the front counter area.
  • Disinfection. Wipe and disinfect high-touch surfaces, door handles, light switches and washroom fixtures.
  • Waste handling. Empty garbage and recycling bins and take the waste to the bin area at the back of the shop.
  • Shop floor. Clean walkways and shared areas on the shop floor and keep them clear of debris.

What they're asking for

  • Entry level. No experience is required; we will train you on our cleaning routine and products.
  • Language. You can follow written and spoken instructions in English.
  • Reliability. You show up on time for a regular afternoon shift and work without close supervision.
  • Safety. You wear the provided gloves and other personal protective equipment as directed.

What the employer offers

  • Wage. The posted rate is paid for all scheduled hours, with overtime after 44 hours in a week.
  • Equipment. Cleaning supplies, gloves and a uniform shirt are provided at no cost.
  • Leave. Paid vacation as set out in the Ontario Employment Standards Act.

About cleaning and housekeeping work in Canada

What the work is

Cleaners and housekeepers maintain offices, hotels, hospitals and private homes. The work covers vacuuming, mopping, disinfecting, laundry and waste handling, and often falls outside normal hours because buildings are cleaned while they are empty.

What employers usually ask for

Formal qualifications are rarely required. Employers look for reliability, attention to detail, and enough English or French to follow instructions and read safety labels on chemicals. Roles in healthcare and childcare settings usually require a criminal record check.

If you are applying from outside Canada

Healthcare cleaning is the part of this category most likely to require a police check and health screening, so allow time for those before you can start. Hotel housekeeping is a common first job for newcomers because hiring is quick and often done on site. Pay in this category is usually close to the provincial minimum wage — check what that is in the province you are targeting before you commit.
