About this role

Willow Creek Greenhouse is a working greenhouse operation in Alberton, PE, growing bedding plants and nursery stock for Island retailers and garden centres. We need a custodian to keep the office, washrooms, lunchroom and greenhouse walkways clean and presentable through the growing season and beyond.

Most days start with the washrooms and lunchroom, then move through the office and the main aisle between the benches. You will empty waste and plant debris bins, mop up water and soil tracked in from the yard, and keep the entrances clear. The pace picks up in spring, and you will work around staff and customers rather than behind closed doors.

What you'll be doing

  • Routine cleaning. Vacuum, sweep and mop floors in the office, washrooms, lunchroom and greenhouse walkways.
  • Washroom care. Clean and disinfect toilets, sinks and fixtures and restock paper and soap daily.
  • Waste handling. Empty garbage and plant debris bins and take bagged waste to the designated collection point.
  • Entrances and glass. Wipe down doors, windows and high-touch surfaces and keep entryways free of soil and water.

What they're asking for

  • No experience needed. We will train the right person on our cleaning products, schedule and storage areas.
  • Reliability. You show up on time for your shift and let us know ahead if you cannot make it.
  • Physical fitness. The job involves standing, bending, lifting up to 20 kg and walking the length of the greenhouse through the day.
  • Language. You can follow written labels and safety instructions and communicate with staff in English.

What the employer offers

  • Seasonal bonus. A completion bonus is paid at the end of the spring rush for staff who stay through it.
  • Gear provided. Work gloves, boots allowance and all cleaning supplies are supplied by the employer.
  • Paid breaks. Two paid 15-minute breaks and an unpaid half-hour lunch on full shifts.

About cleaning and housekeeping work in Canada

What the work is

Cleaners and housekeepers maintain offices, hotels, hospitals and private homes. The work covers vacuuming, mopping, disinfecting, laundry and waste handling, and often falls outside normal hours because buildings are cleaned while they are empty.

What employers usually ask for

Formal qualifications are rarely required. Employers look for reliability, attention to detail, and enough English or French to follow instructions and read safety labels on chemicals. Roles in healthcare and childcare settings usually require a criminal record check.

If you are applying from outside Canada

Healthcare cleaning is the part of this category most likely to require a police check and health screening, so allow time for those before you can start. Hotel housekeeping is a common first job for newcomers because hiring is quick and often done on site. Pay in this category is usually close to the provincial minimum wage — check what that is in the province you are targeting before you commit.
